Mammography is a diagnostic procedure performed to help identify breast cancer in its early stage while the cancer is still small enough to be treated effectively.
Types of Mammograms
- Screening Mammograms – performed for patients who have no symptoms of breast cancer
- Diagnostic Mammograms – performed for patients of any age, who have specific breast symptoms such as new pain, lump or unusual changes to the breast or surrounding tissue. This testing is often performed in combination with a breast ultrasound study to exclude any evidence of cancer.
When you arrive at GNMI you will be required to undress from the waist up and put on a gown that we would provide. Each breast will then be individually positioned and imaged in between 2 plastic plates so that the breast can be compressed and flattened. Some women may feel some discomfort with the procedure; however you should not experience significant pain. The amount of radiation used in mammography testing is minimal and is considered to be very safe.
MRI Breast Scan (Private Pay)- To qualify for this study at our facility you cannot be considered high risk and we will review criteria to determine your risk. Dense breasts on mammography significantly reduces the sensitivity in detecting breast cancer. Breast MRI is better at finding invasive cancers in dense breasts than 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis). Breast MRI screening takes around 20-30 minutes to complete and intravenous contrast is administered.
